Cuban President evokes José Martí’s legacy

President Miguel Díaz-Canel today evoked Cuba’s National Hero. José Martí, on the 130th anniversary of his fall in combat.

Díaz-Canel, in his profile on X, quoted the phrase “I lived in the monster and I know its entrails: -and my sling is that of David”. From a letter of Martí to his friend Manuel Mercado. Who began to write it in the Dos Ríos camp, on May 18th, 1895, and was unable to finish it.

In the text, qualified as his political testament, he assured that he was “every day in danger” of giving his life for the independence of Cuba and thus prevent. “The United States from spreading through the Antilles and falling. With that force more, on our lands of America”.

“130 years after his fall in combat in the fields of Cuba. The posthumous letter and political testament of our Apostle continues to be the guide and support of the deepest anti-imperialism,” said the head of state.

On the same platform, the island’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodriguez, also recalled the anniversary.

“His vast political, intellectual and literary work is the basis of the humanism of the Cuban Revolution and of its international projection in favor of the true integration of Latin America and the Caribbean,” said the foreign minister.

José Julián Martí Pérez (Havana, January 28th, 1853-Dos Ríos, May 19th, 1895) was a Cuban politician, diplomat, poet, essayist, journalist and philosopher. Founder of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and organizer of the Cuban War of Independence.

He was and is considered a man of great Latin American and internationalist vocation. A Cuban of universal projection and the greatest Spanish-American political thinker of the 19th century.

According to specialized critics, the content, style and singular beauty of his poems, letters, journalistic articles and speeches place him as an intellectual of vast culture.
