Munive opens with a victory in the Girón boxing championship

The 71 kilogram national runner-up from Holguin, Jairo Munive, began his journey in the LXII National Boxing Championship “Playa Girón”, held at the Rafael Fortún Hall in the city of Camagüey, with a victory.

Munive, a native of the municipality of Gibara, stepped into the ring in the ninth of the 17 bouts scheduled on Tuesday, during the second day of competitions, and won 3-0 against Yoan Gainza, from Guantanamo.

In this same division also triumphed this day Dairon Girado, from Villa Clara, Yunier Sorsano, from Camagüey, and the representatives of Sancti Spíritus Jorge Cuellar and Adrián Licea. The latter was Munive’s victimizer in the final of the last Girón.

In the same bill, Alián Grandales, from Holguin, was defeated by RSC in the third round by Lázaro Díaz, from Pinar del Rio, in the 80 kg. bout. The Holguin squad, which presented 11 fighters in the Camagüeyana fight, now has a balance of three wins and two losses.

In the first round, Kevin Zayas (48 kg) and Nestor Rodriguez (57 kg) were successful, while Elio Neyra (75 kg) was defeated.

A total of five boxers from Holguin will fight this Wednesday in a 20-fight lineup where Munive and Cuellar, both members of the national pre-selection team, will fight.

Kevin Zayas (48) will also have his second bout against Carlos Fernandez, from Ciego de Avila, and Nestor Rodriguez (57) against Osvaldo Diaz, from Sancti Spiritus.

Finally, in the 80 kilos, international Jorge Soto (Cueto) will debut against local Kárel Simón and Carlos Aguilera will compete against Leonis Thomas, from Guantanamo.

At the end of Tuesday, Santiago de Cuba is the leader in the provincial standings with seven points, followed by Holguin, Guantanamo, Camagüey, Sancti Spiritus and Villa Clara with three points.

The “Playa Giron” boxing competition, which opened with the participation of more than 100 athletes, will conclude next Saturday 17th with the discussion of the titles in the 10 divisions.
