Cuba and Russia Celebrate Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

“Today, Cuba and Russia look to the future with firmness and determination,” confirmed the president of the Caribbean nation, Miguel Díaz-Canel. At the event celebrating the 65th anniversary of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations held in Moscow.

Our friendship has stood the test of time and the most complex and diverse international circumstances. History has taught us that amid the challenges we face, cooperation and solidarity are fundamental pillars of our relationship, the president emphasized.

In his speech on the occasion of the anniversary, the Cuban head of state stated that while in other eras Havana and Moscow victoriously faced the greatest challenges, “today we lack neither challenges nor motivation to resume together the path of freedom in defense of peace, human development, and the future of our peoples,” he stated.

Díaz-Canel highlighted how, over the past six decades, important areas of bilateral collaboration have been revived. Russia is consolidating its participation in strategic projects of our National Economic and Social Development Plan through 2030, and ties have been strengthened in key sectors for our economy.

Such as energy, transportation, the railway industry, agriculture, communications, biotechnology, and the pharmaceutical industry, among others, he added.

In this regard, he highlighted the boom in educational, artistic, and cultural exchanges, citing as examples the recent presentations by artistic groups from St. Petersburg in Havana and Santiago de Cuba. As well as the Russian Film Festival.

Furthermore, the Cuban dignitary commented that the Cuban people highly value the ongoing support of the Eurasian giant in the fight to lift the criminal and unjust blockade and to remove Cuba from the spurious list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism sponsored by the United States.

“We also thank the government of the Slavic nation for its support for Cuba’s accession to the BRICS as a partner country of the bloc, and to the Eurasian Economic Union as an Observer State,” he added. In this regard, he reiterated the commitment to advance these integration initiatives based on the historical relations and ties that unite Cuba with its member states.

Likewise, Díaz-Canel noted that the two nations share common approaches to the main issues on the international agenda. We are united by essential values in defense of multilateralism, international law, and the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter. In the face of attempts to impose an international order based on the sanctioning and coercive rules of the West, he insisted.

“Cuba has expressed concern about the increasingly offensive military doctrine of the United States and NATO outside its borders, the aggressive rhetoric, and unilateral sanctions against Russia. Which contribute to exacerbating regional and international confrontation and tensions and prolonging the conflict in Europe,” the president added.

It is always exciting to be in Russia, but sharing these days of celebrating the Victory over fascism with the people who gave 27 million lives in the Great Patriotic War is a tremendous honor, he emphasized.

The Cuban president reaffirmed that the actions of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) represent an elegy to the heroism that saved humanity from the Nazi Holocaust 80 years ago and today inspire those fighting against the signs of Nazism’s reemergence.
