The Trova in Romerías de Mayo: tradition and renovation in Holguin

The Romerías de Mayo Artistic Youth Festival consolidated trova as one of its central axes. Combining tradition and new voices in its 32nd edition. The event, which promotes all artistic manifestations. Dedicated emblematic spaces to this Cuban genre, with the participation of consecrated and emerging troubadours.

The space Destrabando la Trova, which hosts the Rincón de Romerías of the city of Parks. Historically conducted by the late troubadour Eduardo Sosa, was taken over by Fernando Cabreja, known as “El Cacique de la Trova”. Cabreja took on the challenge of maintaining the intimate format of dialogue and music, with guests such as Geraldo Alfonso, emblematic figure of the genre in Cuba.

“Destrabar la trova” is much more than just another Romerías event, it invites reflection on the genre.
The Romerías evenings feature songs by Nelson Valdés, Leonardo García, Inti Santana and Edelys Loyola, among others. In an atmosphere where the audience sings and applauds each performance.

Another moment of expression of this musical genre is “Quiero una canción”, a musical download at the “Casa de la Trova” that encourages direct exchange between artists and spectators. The space reinforces the participatory nature of the festival, with the reception of classics of the genre, as well as contemporary proposals.

The Romerías de Mayo reaffirmed the vitality of Cuban trova, balancing legacy and renewal. With initiatives such as Destrabando la Trova and Quiero una canción. The festival not only pays tribute to the great names, but also bets on the new generations, ensuring the permanence of the genre.
