The Cinemateca de Cuba’s second branch in Holguin, reopened this Sunday in the Cuban city of parks as part of the program of activities of the Cámara Azul event of the 32nd edition of the Festival Romerías de Mayo.
Luciano Castillo, historian and director of that entity, told the Cuban News Agency that the people of Holguin deserve the reopening of the Cinematheque, because during its years of operation in this city it kept the attendance of a knowledgeable and demanding public, and important artists of the territory were trained.
The concept was always not to be an elitist organization, but an itinerant film museum that would travel throughout the nation, he said.
He said that the first group of films is already in Holguin, with the aim of establishing a cycle of works of Cuban and international cinematography. Through contemporary and restored films.
Castillo stressed that the fundamental policy is the preservation of the national film heritage. Hence the establishment of alliances with international entities to help restore part of that heritage, as it is a very costly job.
Special attention is paid to the publication of bibliography on cinema,“ he said, ”with books that cover the national production made in different periods.
The Cinemateca’s re-inauguration event concluded with the screening at the Martí movie theater of Battleship Potenkim. A film that celebrates its 100th anniversary concluded the reinauguration of the Cinemateca de Cuba in this northeastern city.
According to Castillo, it is a tribute to a work linked to the history of the seventh art in the largest of the Antilles. For having been banned before the revolutionary triumph of January 1959. Due to its patriotic content and its appeal to the masses.
