Housing Construction in Antilla Benefits Vulnerable Families

The construction of a group of 24 homes for families classified as vulnerable is progressing in the municipality of Antilla. Under the close supervision of the territorial authorities. Who emphasize leveraging local resources to address various social problems.

The houses, 10 of which are in the final stages of construction, are made of Patabán Wood. A variety of mangrove that grows in the saline wetlands in the south of the municipality. Where the 14 hectares where controlled felling of the tree has been authorized are located.

The construction process is being carried out by the Antilla Agroindustrial Company. Which is also responsible for felling the trees, processing the wood, and manufacturing the modular panels from which the homes are assembled. Said the director of the organization, Engineer Arnaldo Valero Marrón.

Thus, he explained, a Local Development Project is coming to life, taking into account an endogenous resource whose use dates back to the founding of the municipal capital. Also when the Patabán tree was one of the most commonly used elements in the construction of homes and other buildings.

This plant grows 12 to 15 meters tall, with a trunk diameter of 20 centimeters or a little more. It provides durable wood that is easy to process industrially, making it possible to use it in walls, doors, windows, and other home components.

To exploit the area where the Patabán tree grows, both environmental protection specialists and the State Forestry Service have issued the relevant permits. These permits clearly state that logging is carried out under strict technical standards and also establish the obligation to plant three trees for each adult tree felled, a matter that is recorded in the company’s planting plans, Arnaldo Valero stated.

This experience was presented at the recently held Business Fair in the province of Holguin. Moreover which was attended by more than 100 state and private sector entities. The event showcased their capabilities to produce goods and offer services in a context of interconnectedness and complementarity that fosters the social duty to contribute to eradicating the material problems affecting the population.
