Death toll rises from explosion at southern Iranian port

The death toll from the explosion and subsequent fire at the Shahid Rajai port in southern Iran rose to 28 today, with more than 1,000 injured, and a dozen missing, according to official sources.

The disaster, which occurred the day before, shook the port city of Bandar Abbas and destroyed containers stored near the scene of the fire. The origin of which authorities in the Islamic Republic have yet to issue a report.

Firefighters, supported by helicopters and aircraft, are extinguishing the embers of the fire caused by the explosion and searching for possible victims, according to the official IRNA news agency.
According to local media, approximately 80% of the fire has already been extinguished. The ship was carrying chemicals, and the explosion occurred during unloading operations, according to reports available at the time of writing.

For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that his country’s security services are on alert due to “previous attempts at sabotage and assassination to provoke our legitimate response,” a veiled allusion to Israeli actions inside Iran and abroad against scientists and senior military officials.

Midweek, the Persian foreign minister held meetings in the Sultanate of Oman with a US delegation focused on its peaceful nuclear development program. The possibility of an agreement to ease tensions between Tehran and Washington is bad news for Israel, which counts the Iranian authorities among its greatest adversaries.
