Special Education Teachers Ensure Continuity of Studies In Holguin

Special Education implements a pedagogical model that transfers the teaching-learning process to the homes of children and adolescents with physical and motor disabilities and other associated conditions.

This initiative guarantees educational continuity for those who face greater mobility or health challenges. According to Yudelkis Rivera Olivares, methodologist for the subsystem at the Provincial Education Directorate, 98 specialized teachers currently provide personalized care to 232 students at different levels.

Their work is not limited to imparting academic knowledge but also includes supporting families during the complex rehabilitation process, coordinated with health institutions. The specialist explained that the work of these teachers in Special Education encompasses multiple dimensions.

In addition to teaching the subjects corresponding to each grade level, they develop adapted occupational therapies, collaborate with speech and language therapy and psychopedagogy specialists, and promote community actions to create more inclusive environments.

The benefits of this program are evident: students have made progress in independent living skills, improved their social and family relationships, and actively participated in cultural and sports activities organized near their homes.

However, challenges remain. Rivera emphasized that one of the main challenges is facilitating access to higher education for young people with motor disabilities but preserved intellectual abilities, a goal already being worked on.

Additionally, Holguin has three in-patient classrooms at the “Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja” Pediatric Hospital, where children with long hospitalizations receive academic follow-up and psychological support.

This prevents academic failure and provides the necessary emotional support during their medical stay. This comprehensive system reflects Holguin’s firm commitment to inclusive education, transforming each location into a space for learning and growth.
