Cuba: Official Mourning in Effect for the Death of Pope Francis

Cuba will remain in Official Mourning from this Tuesday at 6:00 a.m. local time until midnight on April 24th, for the death of His Holiness Pope Francis.

The measure was decreed the day before by President Miguel Díaz-Canel following the news of the death that day of the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, at the age of 88.

According to the statement broadcast on national television, Pope Francis was very active in seeking solutions to global problems affecting humanity and the environment, and a fervent advocate for peace.

He agreed with Cuba on many issues on the international agenda during his long and distinguished career as head of state and spiritual leader. The statement stated, highlighting his contributions to strengthening respectful ties between this Caribbean nation and the Holy See.

He emphasized that, moved by deep feelings of affection for the Cuban people. He interceded for the improvement of relations between the United States and Cuba. Advocating that the US government abandon its blockade policy against Cuba.

The statement also recalled the ties of friendship the Supreme Pontiff maintained with Army General Raúl Castro and the reception of President Miguel Díaz-Canel at the Holy See in June 2023.

This Monday, Raúl Castro stated in a letter that he was deeply moved by the death of someone he considered a close friend, and a man of integrity and consistency.

In his message, the leader of the Cuban Revolution highlighted Pope Francis’ tireless work in defense of peace and brotherhood among peoples, and his affection for the people of this Caribbean island.

He also highlighted his personal contribution to fostering fraternal dialogue and understanding in relations between Cuba and the Holy See. Which, he noted, were strengthened during his pontificate.

While the official mourning period is in effect, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on public buildings and military institutions.
