19th Edition of the Gibara Film Festival Concludes

The 19th edition of the Gibara International Film Festival concluded with the presentation of the Lucía Award. For Fiction to the feature film Natural Phenomena, by Cuban director Marcos Díaz Sosa.

Also the award, presented this Saturday by actress Verónica Lynn. Recognized the film for its sensitive and metaphorical story combined with excellent direction and acting.

In this category, Kokuhaku, from Spain; Parto, from Puerto Rico; and When the Walnut Leaves Turn Yellow, from Turkey, received mentions. In the Documentary category, the award went to Lago Escondido: Soberanía en Juego, from Argentina, and El Bosque Intermittent, from Cuba.

Mañana será mejor, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo; and Oasis, from Chile. The film Yo voy conmigo (I Go With Me), from Spain, won the award in the Animation and Experimental categories. With mentions going to Cedro Libanés and 40 Grados a la sombra (40 Degrees in the Shade), both from Argentina.

Moreover the Humberto Solás Films in Progress Award recognized the films Nunca más abril (Never More April), from Mexico, and La gente de la ruta (People of the Route), from Argentina. A mention was given to Pizza Flash, from Italy.

During the closing ceremony, the Factoría de Cine Pobre awards were also presented to the projects Matagigantes (Agigantic Maters), by Osmany Sánchez, and Eres hijo de alguien (You Are Someone’s Son), by Frank Linares García.

Futhermore it was also announced that all competing projects will receive advice and support for their production. Sergio Benvenuto Solás, honorary president of the Festival. Announced the return of the 20th edition next year with more strength and projects that ensure the recovery of the essence with which Humberto Solás created the event in 2003.

In conclusion the Gibara International Poor Film Festival is a renowned event on the alternative film circuit. Held in the town known as Villa Blanca de los Cangrejos, in the north of the province of Holguin, and first held in April 2003.
