13th Street and the surroundings of the intermunicipal terminal known as “Las Baleares“. Located in one of the busiest areas of the city of Holguin. Were known not only for their commercial movement. But also for chaos, illegality and the accumulation of solid waste.

For some time, Holguin residents and visitors criticized the state of abandonment of these spaces. Where illicit trade and garbage hindered traffic and affected the urban image.

However, since March 24, the local authorities undertook a transformation project to rescue these spaces. Although the changes are gradual, in less than a month the first improvements are already perceived. Thanks to the intervention of state institutions, agencies and the community.

Among the entities involved is the Raw Materials Company. In charge of the collection of recyclable materials in the area.

Yovany Gámez Pérez, municipal director of this entity. Explained that the first step was a survey of all forms of non-state management in the area to guarantee proper waste disposal. “100% of the economic actors visited – 28 in total – showed willingness to collaborate. Before, many paid informal workers to dispose of waste.

Which ended up in corners or lamps. Now, with an organized system, we avoid pollution and encourage recycling. As part of the measures, a collection system with tricycles was implemented,” said Gámez Pérez. Although the process is incipient, the streets already look cleaner and more orderly.

However, the authorities recognize that this is only one of the steps of a comprehensive plan that requires continuity and citizen participation. The intervention on 13th Street and the areas surrounding the “Las Baleares” Terminal.
