The short fiction film “Ella y el hotel Miramar” (She and the Miramar Hotel). By filmmaker Yanet Pavón Bernal, from Las Tunas. It is part of the official selection of the Gibara International Poor Film Festival. A film event that will take place from April 15 to 19, in Villa Blanca, Holguin.
Pavón Bernal told the Cuban News Agency exclusively that this work of fiction with documentary elements. Explores the memory of the town of Preston, in the municipality of Guatemala, Holguin. Its identity and the decadence of the architectural heritage and settlers in general.
Between symbols and metaphors, “Ella y el Hotel Miramar” is a much-loved and dreamed work. Which is right now the center of Pavón Bernal’s discourse as a filmmaker. Since in it she had the freedom to express herself as a creator, despite only having a duration of 23 minutes.
Being chosen in the official selection of the Gibara International Film Festival. Is a very great emotion, because the very first thing I did from the cinematographic experience was in this event, in 2016. Hence now I feel that it is like returning to the zero point from which I left, she meant.
From the emotional point of view, she added, Ella y el Hotel Miramar holds meetings and memories of the many untold stories of this North American settlement on the northeastern coast of Cuba. And to think about this short film is also to think about this people. Which is the reality of many Cuban peoples.
Considered the last great project of the filmmaker Said Vargas Esperance. Who died suddenly in 2023, this work also bears the stamp of the troubadour Norge Batista, in the musicalization. And the audiovisual creators Ilder Urquiza and Adrián Vega. Who put their talent and artistic commitment in function of the ideas of Pavón Bernal.
“This story has a lot of me, from the longing to always return to my home. To my grandmother’s house, to childhood and adolescence to meet history face to face and explore untold places and stories. Above all, I return to discourses about women’s voices. Which has already become a trend in my work.”
Ella y el hotel Miramar was awarded the Fiction Pitching of the thirtieth Audiovisual Exhibition “El almacén de la imagen” in 2020. An important award with international scope sponsored by the branch of the Hermanos Saíz Association in Camagüey.
Its presence at the Gibara International Poor Film Festival is a reward for the effort and courage of Pavón Bernal’s team. Made up of artists from Las Tunas, Holguin and Bayamo. Some 500 film works from more than 30 countries have already been confirmed for this event.
