Raúl Castro leads tribute to Vilma Espín

The leader of the Cuban Revolution, Army General Raúl Castro. Led this Monday at the Second Eastern Front Frank País the tribute to the heroine Vilma Espín. On the occasion of the 95th anniversary of her birth.

Also participating in the tribute were President Miguel Díaz-Canel and government and party leaders of the nation. Amerelle, during the main speech of the event, highlighted her leadership in clandestinity and courage in the Sierra Maestra before 1959. Also her legacy at the head of the FMC after the revolutionary triumph.
Raúl Castro brought flowers to Vilma, whose mortal remains rest in the Mausoleum to the Heroes and Martyrs of the Second Eastern Front Frank País. In the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, and also paid tribute to fighters of the Front.

Vilma was a member of the Oriental University Student Federation and participated in the demonstrations of the University in the streets of Santiago. Later, she fought in the clandestine struggle, with the nom de guerre of Deborah. Under the orders of Frank País, especially during the uprising of November 30, 1956 in Santiago de Cuba.

She joined the Rebel Army in the Sierra Maestra when her life was in extreme danger in the urban insurrection, until the revolutionary triumph of January 1, 1959. She founded and chaired the FMC since 1960. From where she played an important role in the defence of rights and in promoting the full emancipation of women.
