Cuba moves towards change in the energy matrix

Cuba is working to achieve a change in the energy matrix. That provides the minimum use of fossil fuels and promotes the use of renewable energy sources (REFs).

By 2030, the island has set itself the goal of generating 29 percent of electricity from these alternatives. And by 2050 the energy transition must be completed. Producing one hundred percent of electricity with FRE. Work is being done on policy and legal regulations for the energy transition.

According to fuel consumption by economic activity, electricity generation, automotive transport. And heat production in the economy account for 84 percent of consumption.

However, electricity production requires 61 percent of the fuels available in the country. National production (crude oil and natural gas) covers 54 percent of generation. Also the other 46 percent, fuel and diesel, which are the most expensive, have to be imported.

Currently, 95 percent of electricity production in Cuba is based on the use of fossil fuels. Only five percent is generated from FRE.

What will happen in electricity generation plants in 2025?

Thermoelectric:
Photovoltaic Solar Energy: Create capacity to generate: 1,200 MW in solar parks. Estimated accumulation: 200 MW.
Wind Energy: Progress in the Herradura I Wind Farm (Las Tunas) and in 22 of the 33 generators assembled (33 MW).
