Cuba is firmly committed to confronting tuberculosis through comprehensive and preventive actions, said Dr. Francisco Durán, national director of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP in the Spanish Acronym).
“With a comprehensive approach that combines technological innovation, health education and accessible health coverage, Cuba continues to strengthen its fight against tuberculosis,” he said.
Although tuberculosis has treatment and cure, its management requires strict discipline, Durán said in an article published on the MINSAP website.
“This disease can be controlled as long as the patient complies responsibly with the treatment, since any non-compliance can trigger serious complications,” he said.
He pointed out that the numbers in the region of the Americas are revealing: in 2023, around 342 thousand cases and approximately 76 thousand deaths associated with this disease were registered.
“These figures underscore the global urgency to strengthen prevention and control measures, and show that, although the disease has a cure, its impact remains alarming,” he said.
The specialist reiterated that in this scenario, and thanks to the application of a prevention and control program, the national health system is strengthened through the integration of technological innovations and cutting-edge preventive strategies, which have allowed significant results.
This includes advanced diagnostic technologies, such as molecular biology equipment and digital X-rays, as well as innovative treatments that minimize the number of pills needed, he said.
In this context, he insisted on the use of the mask and personal hygiene, as timely prevention measures, along with accurate vaccination in newborns.
He also warned about the resurgence of tuberculosis, driven by factors such as immunosuppression, HIV and the presence of chronic diseases.
“Individual responsibility and compliance with treatment are essential,” he said, stressing the importance of going to the doctor in the event of characteristic symptoms such as persistent cough, fever and weight loss.
The message comes on the eve of World Tuberculosis Day on March 24, a date established by the World Health Organization to raise awareness and mobilize resources against one of the oldest and deadliest infectious diseases.
