Cuba gradually restores power system after disconnection

Cubas National Electric System (SEN in the Spanish acronym) has so far generated more than 1,500 megawatts (MW), thanks to the incorporation of generation units throughout the country, experts said today.

The engineer Ramón Pedrera, director of Human Resources of the Electric Union, reported that on Sunday afternoon it was possible to connect the system from Pinar del Río to Guantanamo, although some provinces are still facing damage.

Also he told national television that the Guiteras thermoelectric plant has already synchronized and is in the process of raising loads, as well as unit 8 of Mariel.
Pedrera said that unit 5 of the thermoelectric plant in the province of Artemisa is in the process of starting up and it is expected to synchronize two units in Santa Cruz del Norte in the early morning.

Moreover in the central and eastern regions of the country, the effects have been less, thanks to the progressive recovery of the service. In this sense, he stressed that the current efforts are guided by a structured plan, which includes maintenance tasks and a series of investments designed to guarantee the stability of the Electric System in the long term.

In addition, he explained that the effects of the deficit of generation capacity remain in the country.

Finally in Havana, a total of 167 circuits are connected, which represents more than 575,200 customers with service, 66 percent of the total, for a demand of 356 MW.
Last Friday, a breakdown in the Diezmero substation in Havana caused the significant loss of generation in western Cuba and with it the fall of the system throughout the country.
