The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, today attended the 17th World Youth Summit of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), whose purpose is to promote the digital empowerment of the new generations.
The event, sponsored by the United Nations agency and the Ministry of Communications of the Caribbean nation (Mincom), closes its doors this day and during his visit the Cuban president held a fraternal meeting with Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, director of the Telecommunications Development Office.
Díaz-Canel thanked him for choosing Cuba to host this Summit, as well as for the strong ties of cooperation with the ITU and spoke with Luckyson on issues such as artificial intelligence, inclusion, the role of young people in the digital world.

Opening the meeting on the 11th, Luckyson noted that “Cuba is a role model in integrating digital accessibility to ensure that everyone participates equitably and has already collaborated twice with ITU to host our flagship regional platform, Accessible America – ICT for All.”
“We know that we are in very good hands! Let us thank the Government of Cuba for receiving us,” said the ITU representative.
After several days of debate on the empowerment of new generations in the digital environment, the Summit concludes in the resort of Varadero as an event that provided the space for a frank and inclusive dialogue and the exchange of experiences that promote the use of these technologies for the good of humanity and the development of peoples.
Held in person and virtually, it hosted ITU members, Generation Connect Youth Envoys and invited young people from the United Nations and other related organizations.
The program under discussion included sessions addressing issues related to intergenerational dialogue and its contributions to take advantage of ICTs to improve health, well-being and conceive a better future.
For three days, delegates to the ITU World Summit also discussed Cybersecurity, digitalization of societies and economies; and increasing exposure to cyberattacks and threats.
In addition, they held a guided networking and rapid partnership session to promote and encourage the implementation of projects and activities led by young people in the exhibition space, empowerment from economic aspects of ICT and digital transformation: innovative business models.
The young people presented strategies to learn about the regional priorities of their sector to promote its equitable development and to learn about the existing opportunities also for women in Artificial Intelligence and other transformative technologies.
A final report emerges from the event that will collect the perspectives, innovative ideas and challenges faced by the different regions and will constitute a guide to harmonize national, regional and global digital agendas.
