The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, 30 years after its implementation, will be the focus of the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) at the United Nations, which begins today. The meeting, which will run until March 21 at the UN headquarters in New York.
This is precisely the multilateral organization‘s largest annual event dedicated to this issue and women‘s empowerment and will assess the progress of the Declaration, which remains the most revolutionary roadmap in terms of gender equality.
The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was adopted in 1995 by the Governments participating in the Fourth World Conference on Women.
According to UN Women, progress is possible, but it has been too slow, uneven and fragile. Every 10 minutes, a woman is killed by someone in her own family.
The gender gap in labor force participation has remained stagnant for 20 years. In 2022, the organization added, in the course of a single year, the proportion of women killed in war contexts doubled.
On the other hand, emerging technologies promise equality, but they are used as a weapon against women and girls, and they are also the most affected by the worsening climate crisis. During CSW69, governments, civil society organizations, scholars and activists from around the world will strategize and agree on actions, policies and investments for gender equality.
