The Territorial Oncology Center of Holguin, attached to the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Hospital, strengthens programs to improve the quality of life of cancer patients in eastern Cuba, who benefit from its services.
Dr. Pedro Escalona Díaz, director of the institution, told the Cuban News Agency that the facilities treat more than 10,000 patients annually in radiotherapy alone and also have areas for clinical oncology, nuclear medicine and brachytherapy.
He pointed out that locations such as the lung, prostate and breasts stand out among those with the highest incidence, which is why prevention actions are carried out in health areas with the main risk groups.
He stressed that in the territory there is specialized personnel for the early detection of the disease, through consultations distributed in secondary health care where professionals from the different areas rotate.
He also explained that modifications are currently being made to the infrastructure with the renovation of the exterior paint and furniture in addition to the constant maintenance of the equipment, with more than 20 years of operation.
Holguin is the second province in Cuba with the highest reports of cancer, which is why the General Directorate of Health prioritizes human and material resources for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of this disease, among the main causes of death in the world.
The institution also benefits patients from Granma, Las Tunas, Camagüey, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo with different procedures and services taking into account established international standards and high standards of preparation of care personnel.
