The outstanding Cuban composer, music producer and audiovisual producer Edesio Alejandro, National Music Award (2020), died today in Spain at the age of 66, after a prolonged fight against prostate cancer.
This was reported by the National Center of Popular Music, in a message on its official Facebook page where it said: “Today we lose a beloved son of Cuban culture again.”
Edesio Alejandro was a multifaceted artist, recognized for his ability to fuse genres and explore new sounds. From rock and electronic music to the creation of soundtracks for the seventh art, his work transcended borders and generations, consolidating him as an essential figure in the Cuban and international cultural scene.
His prolific work is part of Cuba‘s cultural heritage, with memorable musical compositions for films such as Clandestinos (1987), Hello Hemingway (1990), Madagascar (1994), Life is Whistling (1998), Suite Habana (2002), Madrigal (2006) and José Martí, el ojo del canario (2010).
He also directed and orchestrated the music for more than 40 plays, 13 television series, as well as identifying and ambient music for several international fairs.
Edesio Alejandro has ventured into a diversity of styles, from classical to contemporary, achieving the fusion of Cuban with elements of international music.
He was also an active member of the Hollywood Film Academy and the Latin Grammy and Grammy academies.
He settled in Madrid to receive medical treatment, facing his illness with integrity and dignity. However, his health progressively deteriorated, which eventually led to his departure.
Although his physical presence is gone, Edesio Alejandro’s legacy will live on in his vast musical oeuvre, which will continue to inspire future generations and recall his invaluable contribution to the cultural heritage of Cuba and the world.
