Cuba continues to empower its women today and complies with the agreements of the Fourth World Conference on Women, contained in the Declaration and Platform for Action of Beijing, China.
The evaluation took place the day before in Havana during the Second National Update Workshop on the National Program for the Advancement of Women, headed by the secretary general of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC in the Spanish acronym), Teresa Amarelle, and Deputy Prime Minister Inés María Chapman.
Representatives of this sector on the Caribbean island presented progress in terms of gender equality and in the 12 areas of Special Attention approved at the summit held in 1995 in the Asian nation.
According to the member of the national secretariat of the FMC Osmayda Hernández, this Saturday‘s meeting also put into context the scope of the action plan in this area to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
They also noted progress in the fulfillment of the seven areas of the government‘s plan for the advancement of women that it conceives, economic empowerment, prevention and social communication and decision–making.
This program also weighs compliance with legislation and the rights of this population group, their sexual and reproductive health and participation in research, Hernández said.
Four years after the implementation of the Cuban government program for the Advancement of Women, the FMC appreciates results, challenges and new goals, said Anielka Fernández, a member of the organization’s secretariat at the country level.
For her part, the member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party and top leader of the union, Teresa Amarelle, urged to maintain and raise the link with the federated women at the base to continue strengthening their autonomy in society.
