Cancer, between prevention and devastating impact

Cancer, a word that evokes fear and that, unfortunately, has become a palpable presence in the lives of many people. Far from being an inevitable sentence, the fight against cancer is an open front where prevention, early detection and scientific advances stand as the main weapons.

While genetics play an undeniable role in some cases, it’s crucial to banish the idea that cancer is simply a game of chance. The scientific evidence is overwhelming: up to 40% of cases are preventable. This means that adopting a healthy lifestyle can make a substantial difference.

How can we shield ourselves from this silent threat? A balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains, limiting the consumption of processed meats, saturated fats and refined sugars. Regular physical activity is also an option. A sedentary lifestyle is a significant risk factor. Incorporating at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily can strengthen our immune system and reduce the chances of developing certain types of cancer.

Avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption, two harmful habits directly linked to an increased risk of lung, mouth, throat, liver and other organ cancers. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays is one of the main causes of skin cancer. Using sunscreen, appropriate clothing and avoiding the hours of greatest sun intensity are essential measures.

Of course, early detection is essential. Getting regular checkups and screenings specific to different types of cancer (mammography, colonoscopy, etc.) can significantly increase the chances of successful treatment.

The impact of cancer goes far beyond physical health. It profoundly affects the mental, emotional, and financial health of patients and their families. The stigma associated with the disease, the fear of treatment and the uncertainty about the future are challenges that require a comprehensive approach and constant support.
Fortunately, new targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and more precise diagnostic techniques are transforming the landscape of their treatment, offering hope and prolonging the lives of many patients.

In short, the fight against cancer is a shared responsibility. Informing ourselves, taking preventive measures, supporting research and providing accompaniment to those who need it are actions that can make a difference. We can’t eliminate cancer completely, but we can minimize its impact and build a future where hope conquers fear.
