Special day of tribute to Sandino is held in Holguin

A special day of tribute to the General of Free Men, Augusto César Sandino, promotes the delegation of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP in the Spanish acronym) in Holguin, with the active participation of the educational sector, for the historical transcendence of his thought and leadership in the struggles of the Nicaraguan people against the occupation of the U.S. army.

The school, which bears the name of the illustrious National Hero of Nicaragua, hosted the opening ceremony of the Day on the 130th anniversary of his assassination in Larreynaga, a municipality in the department of León. Declared Historical Heritage of the Nation, since August 23, 2002.

In this special morning, Ms. Lupe Isabel Fernández Ramírez, delegate of ICAP in the province, reviewed the importance of the day, dedicated to a simple man, who grew up in the midst of many difficulties and at the age of 17 (in 1912), witnessed the first military occupation of U.S. forces preceded by successive landings, which lasted until 1925 and was redeveloped until, in 1934, the Yankee troops were expelled by Sandino.

The day of tribute
Called, Sandino in Us, it is served nationally by ICAP, together with the Cuban Foreign Ministry and the Embassy of Nicaragua in Havana, with a program of activities that includes visits and exchanges in schools and institutions that bear Sandino’s name; Talks with Cuban internationalists who carried out missions in that country.

In the case of Holguin, it began at the Augusto César Sandino Basic Secondary School, inaugurated in 1982, on Capitán Urbino Avenue, Salida de San Andrés; with an enrollment of 402 students, attended by 26 professors.
The delegate of Icap and the official of the municipal directorate of Education, Ms.C, Ana Cepena, participated in the special morning, together with Aniuska Soler Mendoza, director of the center, where Professor Josefa Tamayo also spoke, and enjoyed the presentation of choirs and a dance, by students and teachers.

Sandino never bowed to imperial interests, nor to the agreements adopted by successive Nicaraguan governments, counting in his long history of struggles, his linkage, in Mexico, with leaders of various syndicalist, worker, socialist, anarchist and Freemason groups.

On the other hand when he returned to his country on October 26, 1926, he rose up in arms, joining the constitutionalist cause, at the head of the workers of the mines of San Albino. The following month he organized and directed the attack on a barracks, whose victory led to him being appointed General in Chief of the Army of Las Segovias, where he established his base of operations.

With barely 30 men, Sandino began a national war against the U.S. invaders and the sell-out government of José María Moncada, constituting, on September 2, 1927, the Army for the Defense of National Sovereignty of Nicaragua, which led, in 1933, to the overthrow and withdrawal of U.S. forces.

But, on February 21, 1934, he was arrested and murdered, along with the writer Sofonías Salvatierra, Minister of Agriculture, who had invited him to a lunch, and his lieutenants, generals, Francisco Estrada and Juan Pablo Umanzor, whose criminal act was carried out by members in charge of his guard.

Juan Pablo Umanzor, whose criminal act was carried out by troops in charge of his custody, as confirmed by the dictator Anastasio Somoza García, president in the period 1936 – 1956, who confirmed that he had received orders from the United States ambassador, Arthur Bliss Lane, to take his life, as he was considered a communist.
However, the example of this anti-imperialist fighter led to the founding of the Sandinista National Liberation Front, which put an end to the Somoza dictatorship and established a revolutionary government that, going through different organizational moments, has survived all the measures of the empire.
