Cuba foresees gradual recovery of tourism

The authorities and professionals of the travel sector in Cuba are optimistic about the possibility of a recovery of tourism that will facilitate economic solutions to the rest of the country.

In the midst of hardship and constant financial and commercial challenges, the smoke-free industry can provide solutions, and return to levels prior to 2019 when the Covid-19 pandemic hindered development.

Precisely by that date, the Ministry of Tourism (Mintur in the Spanish acronym) expected to soon reach the record of serving five million foreign visitors per year, when previously it exceeded four million in the same periods.

Regarding the projections for 2025, Cuba’s Minister of Tourism, Juan Carlos García, highlighted raising the quality of service and the competitiveness of the destination, diversifying markets, promoting multi-destination, serving traditional markets such as Canada and Russia with priority, and increasing air connectivity.

He also aimed to encourage demand through the alliance with Cuban aviation, and increase the participation of the national industry for the substitution of imports, generating productive chains.

Moreover, he explained that in 2024, two million 203 thousand 117 visitors arrived on this island, which represented 71 percent of the plan and 90.4 percent of what was achieved in 2023. Of the main source markets, eight grew compared to the previous year, and five met forecasts.

García added that 132 international awards were received in 74 facilities, and others that led to culture and beaches.

So as a strength for the recovery of tourism in the country there are currently about 84 thousand rooms, and 19 foreign chains participate in the tourism activity, of which 14 execute investments and are in operation.

In terms of digital transformation, the minister highlighted the strategy promoted to improve Internet connection services, and Cayo Largo del Sur remains as a driving project of the digital agenda in Cuba.

Precisely, these data support the current optimism, when the main recreational scenarios such as Havana, the capital of the country, Varadero and the eastern province of Holguin, together with the keys of the northern center of the archipelago currently exhibit a greater movement of travelers from many corners of the world.
