Demographic dynamics that tend to age and decrease the population

Cuba reaffirms priority of public policies in the face of its demographic dynamics

Cuba reaffirmed the need to apply public policies to address its demographic dynamics that tend to age and decrease the population, during a meeting held today by the government group in charge of the matter.

At the meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Manuel Marrero, the National Office of Statistics and Information, reported that the Cuban population exceeds nine million inhabitants and closed last year with a decrease of more than 300 thousand people compared to 2023.

A quarter of the island’s population is 60 years old or older and constitutes the only population group that has grown in recent years, which requires raising the priority given by the Government to care programs for the elderly, television reported.

Likewise, in 2024, only around 71 thousand births were registered, the lowest figure in recent decades, which forces fertility and maternal and child programs to also be strengthened, the source said.

This government structure highlighted the importance of the recently created National System for Comprehensive Life Care, which responds to the purposes of reversing the negative indicators of Cuban demographic dynamics.

In this sense, the head of Government indicated reviewing compliance in each territory with the authorization of “children’s homes”, intended for the care, in state institutions, of the children of working mothers.

It is a social responsibility that companies and organizations in the municipalities must assume without depending on budgets and decisions of the Central Government, said Marrero.

For their part, the Center for Demographic Studies of the University of Havana and the Ministry of Economy and Planning presented arguments that point out the possibilities of implementing public policies on this sensitive issue.
