Special Education in Holguin, made up of 26 schools, advocates for greater social inclusion of children and young people with disabilities, as well as strengthening their self-validity through the development of projects with the collaboration of entities, families and the community.
Yudelkis Rivera Olivares, teaching methodologist in the General Directorate of the sector, explained to ACN that through this support network, they are currently carrying out a group of initiatives aimed at facilitating the acquisition of knowledge, cognitive growth and confidence of the more than three thousand students who are enrolled in the territory.
With various topics related to the world around them, such as care for the environment, the history and culture of their locality, and artistic practices, these Special Education programs prepare students to function in society taking into account their personal needs and interests.
These include a project at the Renato Aguilera Galván school in Moa, which teaches children about maritime ecosystems and the importance of their protection, as well as another aimed at cleaning the coasts in the municipality of Gibara, where recycled materials are used in the creation of media and toys used in classes.
The strengthening of ties with institutions was essential in the materialization of links with the Baní Indo-Cuban Archaeological Museum and the University of Holguin which, together with the Haydée Santamaría center for children with autism, prepares primary teachers trained in the detection and special attention of cases that may be found in their classrooms.
Likewise, the job training of students in order to motivate them to have a life project where they can work as professionals or workers is also a prioritized objective. An example of this is working with companies, including the Inejiro Asanuma Spinning Mill, in Gibara, which has served to generate sources of employment for graduates.
The application of these methods in the methodology of each level of teaching favors the retention and internalization of knowledge, in turn stimulating the improvement of young people, of whom 14 graduated last year from 12th grade and guaranteed their continuity of study in university careers, he added.
With the largest network of schools in the country, the northeastern province provides extensive coverage for schoolchildren with particular educational needs, whether or not associated with a disability, including those linked to sensory and intellectual difficulties, delayed mental development, behavioral disorders and the autism spectrum.
