Electra Arenal Huerta awarded distinction to Holguin artist

The Electra Arenal Huerta distinction granted by the Provincial Center of Plastic Arts of Holguin, together with the Provincial Directorate of Culture, to stimulate artists, authors, researchers and institutions with a significant contribution, was awarded to the Holguin sculptor Luis Ramón Silva Silva, for his lifelong work.

The distinction was awarded within the framework of the collaborative artistic-community project “La Oficina” that recently closed in the province, as part of the Havana Biennial and its sub-headquarters in the El Purial community, located on the Holguin-Playa Guardalavaca highway, 13 km from the provincial capital.

The recognition, according to Silva, is named after a renowned Mexican artist who did so much in Holguin, which fills him with pride: «I feel that I did not work in vain (…) it supports my work of so many years making sculptures without having a school degree. Time didn’t pass by chance, I left something behind.

For her part, Yuricel Moreno Zaldívar, director of the Provincial Center of Plastic Arts of Holguin, said that the distinction recognizes Silva’s work for his career of more than 40 years and his dedication to the development of sculpture in the province, as he maintains a poetic, very authentic language that distinguishes him among other expressions of this artistic discipline in the territory.

“Silva remains faithful to his peasant roots, which gives a seal of distinction to his work, a sign of his roots in Cuban tradition and art and of defending the name of Cuba and contemporary Cuban art from the community.”

Among Silva’s works, the locations of the busts of José Artigas and Miguel Hidalgo on Avenida Los Libertadores in Holguin stand out; Monument to the martyrs of December 9 in Six Columns; Sculptural mural in the Lucía Íñiguez Landín Clinical Surgical Hospital and a set of

ferro-cement sculptures in the Pesquero III and Varadero Hotels. In addition to several awards and participation in large-scale events such as the Havana Biennial.
