The joint work of the Imaging Service and the Holguin Ophthalmological Center, both belonging to the Lucía Íñiguez Landín Clinical Surgical Hospital, made it possible to perform diagnostic ocular ultrasounds, a test that promises significant advances in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.
The multidisciplinary team that develops it is made up of radiologists and ophthalmologists from the institution given the need to rationalize health services in a complex context, where the availability of resources becomes a challenge. Thus, the experience and knowledge of radiologists, experts in the interpretation of medical images, in combination with the expertise of ophthalmologists, specialists in ocular diseases, opens up the possibility of performing ocular ultrasound studies with greater precision and effectiveness.
This initiative positively impacts the quality of care and diagnosis for patients, ocular ultrasound allows obtaining detailed images of the internal structures of the eye, which can help diagnose a variety of conditions, such as retinal detachments, ocular tumors, vitreous hemorrhages and cataracts.
Thanks to the use of ultrasonography, risks are reduced to a minimum and unlike other more invasive diagnostic methods, ocular ultrasound is a harmless technique that provides valuable information, without causing harm to the patient. It even speeds up processes and services by performing rapid assessments, especially if used in emergency situations, such as eye trauma, where time is a crucial issue to prevent permanent damage.
Another of the unquestionable advantages of this test is better monitoring of chronic eye diseases, so that specialists can observe changes in the patient’s condition over time and adjust treatments in accordance with what is observed.
The use of ocular ultrasounds in Holguin will expand the capacity of the health institution to diagnose and treat diseases of this nature, with an improvement in both the quality of diagnosis and ophthalmological treatments.
