The 60th Anniversary of the October Revolution Company in Holguin works on the capital repair of railway carriages for the transportation of products from the rationed bread basket and other items.
The publication of the Granma newspaper highlights that today the recovery process is carried out in five units of the batch of 11 that must run on rails again this year, according to the contract signed by the directors of the plant of the Business Group of the Sideromechanical Industry and the base business unit Ferrocarriles Holguin.
He adds that the carriages come from railway parks in the provinces of Holguin and Santiago de Cuba, where they remained unused and uncared for a long time, so they arrived with a high degree of deterioration due to the effects of corrosion, which requires them to be used thoroughly to put them back into service.
Engineer Alián Roberto Cordovés Toirac, general director of the repair entity, informed Granma of the provincial government’s interest in increasing the vitality of rail transportation, due to the impact it has on cargo volumes and fuel savings, when compared to the operations carried out by trucks and other vehicles on tires.
After confirming that good work identifies the company’s production processes, he asserted that there is special care in this task, because they have the purpose of becoming leaders in the recovery of railway carriages in the East of the country, which involves efforts in order to obtain money from the Transportation Development Fund, necessary for the replenishment of raw materials.
The note states that currently, to replace the floors and other parts, they have used metal sheets acquired with their own resources, to which is added the use of angles and beams recovered in flea markets and other recycling depot sites.
Granma points out that the base business unit Ferrocarriles Holguin has supplied the wood for the internal lining of the carriages, and will intervene with specialized personnel in the repair of the running and brake systems, as well as in the certification that will validate the return to the railway tracks.
