Pig Center in Holguín contributes to food security

The Cochico Dos pig breeding farm, located in the municipality of Rafael Freyre in Holguin province, contributes to food and nutritional security of the population by increasing the Creole breed (dark skin) for commercialization throughout the northeastern territory.

Leonardo Pérez Santos, head of the entity, explained to ACN that with the aim of advancing the Food Sovereignty Plan by rescuing pig breeding, mainly of the Dark Skin species that was in danger of extinction, in 2020 that specialized unit was recovered after more than 10 years in disuse.

Although initially intended for the reproduction of the volume of specimens of the traditional Creole breed, which has ideal characteristics adaptable to the island ecosystem, in addition to excellent indicators of meat production, they have added typologies such as Yorkshire and Hampshire, he informed.

At present, they have a total of 55 reproducers, 30 of them belonging to the pure black Creole variety, and they have around 194 animals between prebreeding, offspring and stallions, which are destined to fundamental objectives such as the increase of the mass and social consumption through the sale to the population, he pointed out.

Pérez Santos pointed out that one of the priorities of the center is to comply with the strategy of self-sufficiency by implementing the productive chain with the peasantry, a program in which they participate with the cultivation of yucca, sweet potato and protein plants on 20 hectares of land owned by their users, which make up the total animal diet used.

He also added that by 2025 they have proposed to achieve some goals that will allow them to increase their contribution to the Holguin people’s food by increasing the number of reproductive females to 60, increasing the number of offspring per birth, reducing the losses after birth and cooperating with the supply of specimens to highlander producers.

These results are influenced by the attention, management and incidence of diseases, for which they take measures such as the use of traditional natural medicine to replace medicines or other substances that can damage the quality of the meat for consumption, he said.

For markers of productivity, efficiency and sustainability in the agricultural activity, despite the extensive droughts suffered throughout the year, the municipality of Rafael Freyre in Holguin was selected as the provincial headquarters of the central event for the 67th anniversary of the Triumph of the Revolution.
