Baseball: Holguín and Mayarí, a win apiece

The team of Sultanes of Holguín started with a win the defense of its crown in the final of the 47th Provincial Baseball Series by defeating the squad of Alegres of Mayarí (4×2) at the Feliú Leyva stadium in the called Cuban City of the Parks.

César Concepción, who pitched six solid innings, allowed seven hits, stroke out three batsmen and walked three men -one intentional-, all that in the first inning. Then Jesús Quintán took over the box.

On the other hand, Wilson Paredes – the starter of Mayarí-, who pitched six innings, allowed two earn runs, nine hits, stroke out four batsmen and walked two men, was relieved by Giorvis López, the eventual loser of the game.

In summary, the Holguin team produced twelve hits to eight for the Mayari squad, each team made one error. The final score favored the locals (4-2).

On the second day, the Alegres of Mayarí matched the provincial baseball final, with a 4×2 score.

The Sultanes of Holguín took the lead in the fourth inning when they combined a pair of singles, a run and an error, but the Alegres of Mayari broke the tie in the fifth inning with a pair of singles, a run and a sacrifice bunt, and took the decisive advantage in the seventh when they scored three runs.

The Sultanes of Holguin began the seventh inning with a single to left by Andrys Agüero and a walk to Richard Oliva, which concluded the winning spell for thrower Yusmel Velázquez (8-0).

Then reliever Yosmel Garcés, who allowed a hit by utility Jolber Naranjo, dominated Edilse Silva (4-0) with runners in all bases.

Garcés then retired all eight batters he faced, three by strikeout, to earn a save.

In summary, the Alegres of Mayari produced nine hits; the Sultanes of Holguin, six. Each team made three errors, the visiting squad made three double plays and in the first inning, with the bases loaded, center fielder Edward Magaña made a fantastic catch against Ernesto Torres’ long connection that prevented at least a couple of runs.

The final, until one team reaches three wins, should continue this Thursday at the Emilio Gómez Bermúdez stadium in Mayarí, but it is raining in most of the province, and the possibility of using the Mayor General Calixto García stadium as an emergency venue remains in force.
