Holguín implements circular economy with good experiences

The business sector in Holguín province has positive experiences in the application of the circular economy, one of the achievements of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment as part of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

This policy, introduced in Cuba since 2022, consists of a nature-friendly program that seeks to recover materials from the production process and reuse them in new goods, contributing to the reduction of solid waste pollution and economic savings.

Juan Carlos González Leyva, senior territorial specialist of the Policy, stressed to the Cuban News Agency that among the most notable examples of the application of the regulation in the province, stands out the Lázaro Peña Cigarette Company, with a wide range of assortments resulting from the use of surpluses.

He pointed out that among its achievements is the reduction of dust particles in the environment and the use of reconstituted tobacco as an option to take advantage of the leaves and protect the soil nutrients.

Also noteworthy is the Ecomadera group, belonging to the private sector, which reuses recycled plastic to manufacture pieces that are usually made of wood used in chairs, tables, bridges, walkways, among others, said the executive.

The alternatives are already being used in tourism works and institutions such as the Octavio de la Concepción and Pedraja Children’s Hospital, where there is an agreement for the manufacture of ramps, parallel ramps and other implements for the rehabilitation area of that health care unit, which benefits patients from the eastern provinces.

Holguín is also developing lines in light industry that allow the use of surplus paper, cardboard and fabric used in the manufacture of diaries, teaching aids, gift bags, carpets and kitchen towels for their commercialization, which is invested in higher wages earned by the workers.
