The First Provincial Workshop “The Memory that Saves“, led by intellectual Ventura Carballido Pupo, creator of the event, was held in Holguin with the participation of historians, researchers and representatives of several social sectors.
The project has its genesis in the suggestion made by then President Raúl Castro Ruz to Carballido in 2003, during a congress of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR) aimed at rescuing the historical memory related to the life and work of the protagonists of the Revolution, since its triumph to date.
At first, a total of 21 historical events in the territory of Holguin, which are in danger of being lost, if they are not saved in time, as is the case of the first School of Agricultural Accountants, created under the guidance of Fidel Castro, at the institute ITH Calixto García, and the first Militia School of Moa, created by Raúl Castro, the history of Mining and the sugar industry in Holguin, among other events.
Most of the documents and valuable objects, which are evidence of important historical facts, today are in the possession of people and some institutions, reason why the need of rescuing them, as they meet the requirements to be part of the Historical Heritage.
To date, the Provincial Archive of History in the city of Holguin that has two thousand meters of historical documents, has the responsibility to maintain active those documentary funds, which as of 1959, correspond to the stage of the Revolution.
The objective of the Project The Memory that Saves, is to identify and locate documents through document managers, work on their conservation, in the different supports to transfer them to the institutions in charge of their custody.
The interventions of the people attending the workshop, ratified the commitment to contribute to the rescue of the historical memory of Holguin through their research.
Contests will be organized and will be rewarded by entrepreneurs from Holguin who are part of the project.
The organizers informed about the call for the II Edition of the Workshop to be held on June 6, 2025, taking into account that on that day in 2022, the first actions to rescue the historical memory were carried out, thus today the project the Memory that Saves Project.
