
Two athletes and a coach, all of them table tennis players, from the province of Holguin participated in representation of Cuba in the Pan American Games for the Deaf (PANAMDES), which took place in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
The information of Alexander Moreno Hernandez, who for several years was provincial commissioner of this discipline, specifies that to the appointment of PANAMDES attended the athletes Dianka Montero and Alexander Lobaina, both under the guidance of the outstanding trainer Jorge Luis Vega Guerrero.
Individually, Dianka was the best performer with two silver medals, one in the women’s singles and the other in the women’s doubles with Yunisleidis Ortiz, as well as a bronze in the mixed event, in a duo with Yeandri Alcolea.
In the case of Lobaina, he joined forces with Alcolea in the men’s doubles and won a bronze metal. Both competitors were eliminated in the individual competition.
The Cuban delegation in PANAMDES won 22 medals, including four titles won by the multi-champion in deaflympics Suslaydi Girat and Héctor Daniel Pérez, two per capita.
Led by the extra-class Suslaidy Girat, Cuba will participate in the VI Pan American Deaf Games Canoas 2024 to be hosted by the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul from November 10 to 17.
Athletes from 17 nations will compete in 12 disciplines, the event’s official site indicates.
“Cuba will participate in chess, athletics, karate do, taekwondo and table tennis,” Douglas Andux, methodologist of Inder’s Department for People with Disabilities, told JIT.
There will also be action in basketball, soccer, swimming, volleyball, judo, badminton, cycling and bowling.
