The workers’ movement in Holguin, despite the many difficulties faced by the country so far in 2024, is making important efforts in this period to favor food production under the guidance of the Cuban Workers’ Confederation (CTC for its Spanish acronym).
Yaritza Palacios Estupiñán, a member of the Provincial Secretariat of the CTC, told Periódico Trabajadores that the eastern province has been the scenario of major drives to boost production, in which workers have turned to food production, the sanitation of workplaces and in communities.
Among the most outstanding achievements is the massive drives towards production farms that supply with food the provincial capital city, which include Beola, La Yuraguana, Limoncito and Arroyo Seco, especially during the cold and spring agricultural campaigns.
The information points out that even in those municipalities where there are no large production farms, workers have made it towards other planting methods such as on farms and plots and in the 96 vegetable gardens throughout the territory.Specifically, significant contributions have been made in sugar cane planting in the municipalities of Cueto, Mayarí, Báguanos, Cacocum and Urbano Noris; as well as in coffee harvesting in five territories of Holguin province.
Since May, with the creation at provincial level of the “Calixto García” Production Movement, there have been more than 165 drives involving more than 14 thousand workers, who have generated an economic effect that exceeds 82 thousand pesos.
The union leader informed that the activities carried out include the planting and harvesting of viands such as yucca, sweet potatoes and plantains; the preparation of land for crops; the construction and assembly of facilities for raising poultry and pigs; in addition to cleaning and maintenance tasks in work centers and communities.
A key objective of the workers’ movement has been to facilitate the follow-up of requests for arable land by the labor collectives, so that up to now 2,503 centers belonging to different unions are under control and can now implement production actions, since they have more than 952 hectares, distributed in 95 farms, 210 plots, 246 orchards and 96 vegetable gardens.
At the end of September, 225 new applications for arable land were registered, totaling 8,686 hectares approved, which will strengthen the productive capacity of the trade union movement in Holguín.With information from Trabajadores / Translated by Radio Angulo
