New actions of the international project Former (Strengthening Leadership and Participation of Women in the Renewable Energy Sector in Cuba) extend the use of these alternatives in the province of Holguin, one of the government’s development priorities.
Through the installation of solar panels and water heaters in health, science and service institutions, this project has a positive impact on reducing the use of fossil fuels.
Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, sub-delegate for the environment in the territory, told ACN that these devices optimize processes in hospitals and children’s day care, where rural and hard-to-reach localities in the municipalities of Moa, Báguanos and the city of Holguin are included.
The executive also indicated that the Former international project made a donation of teaching resources to Luis de Feria Polytechnic school for the purpose of installing a specialized classroom to prepare students in the assembly of panels, hydroelectric plants and the design of biogas treatment plants.
Former, financed by Canada, also includes the installation of solar pumps for water supply in farms and rural settlements in the territory of Holguín, with a considerable improvement in accessibility to these services.
Since 2020, this international collaboration program has been implemented in Cuba with the aim of promoting a 24 percent change in the energy matrix, one of the Caribbean island’s development objectives until 2030.
