The Cuban municipality of Moa, in the northeastern Holguin province, has reported heavy rains in the last 24 hours, with an accumulated 174 millimeters in that locality and flooding in several neighborhoods.
Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, territorial delegate of Hydraulic Resources, told the Cuban News Agancy that the highest volumes are registered in the rain gauges of the Moa dam, and of Derivadora and Aprovechamiento reservoirs with 30, 50 and 174 millimeters, respectively.
For his part, Rubiel de la Cruz Rabí, journalist of Moa TV, stressed that residents in the neighborhoods Pedro Soto Alba and Cabaña, near the river of the same name, traditionally flooded by the rising waters of the tributary, are being evacuated as a preventive measure.

He indicated that some 200 people are being sheltered at Antonio López polytechnic school, family homes and other institutions, taking into account the guidelines of the Civil Defense and the Municipal Defense Council.

Likewise, work is being carried out in the area known as Cementerio Viejo in Mangos Joselillo area, near the Pedro Soto Alba nickel industry and the lower parts of the coastal line to preserve human lives and economic objectives, he said.
The occurrence of locally heavy rains is due to the passage of a trough storm, which is affecting the easternmost part of Cuba, mainly the provinces of Holguin and Guantanamo.

In addition to these weather conditions, the orography of the region is prone to the occurrence of this type of phenomenon, according to the Institute of Meteorology.
It was also reported that heavy rains and floods have occured in Baracoa, Guantanamo province.
