PhD. Marisol Pérez Campaña, Vice Rector of the University of Holguín, is in charge of the quality management process of this House of Higher Education, which after its integration process in 2015, will undergo its first institutional evaluation during October 21-25.The external evaluations carried out by the National Accreditation Board to the study programs and higher education centers in Cuba are the way to recognize and validate the quality of university teaching processes.
With the certified category obtained by the former José de la Luz y Caballero and Oscar Lucero Moya institutes, prior to its amalgamation, the University of Holguin is undergoing an analysis of the results of its of work for the last five years. In this regard, Pérez Campaña comments: “Among the main results that have been achieved by the University of Holguin in the last years and that allow us to face the process with optimism, is the composition of the faculty, with a high percentage of professors with higher categories of assistants, tenured professors and PhD.
The results achieved in the accreditation processes of our majors, master’s degrees, postgraduate courses and doctorates degrees is one of the most important elements that has characterized these last years. We have achieved 54.2 and 76.8 percent of accredited graduate and postgraduate programs, of which thirty-four are of excellence, respectively, are of excellence.
These indicators endorse the quality management of our university processes.”
The regulations by the National Accreditation Board for assessing the performance of universities include six variables: relevance and university context in general, students, postgraduate and research, infrastructure, impact and human resources. Each of these variables is subdivided into several indicators.
The University of Holguin towards external evaluation soon
“We have our strategic project for the follow-up and control of improvement plans, which contribute to increasing the results of the university’s main performance indicators.
On the other hand, in order to be submitted to an external evaluation process, it is required to have at least two self-evaluation processes.
We created our work commissions and have systematically developed these self-evaluation processes.
We also prepared a procedure that allows us to evaluate improvement plans in order to develop successful improvement plans in order to successfully develop this institutional evaluation process. This has been socialized in several international academic international academic spaces, among which the University Congress stands out.
Among the strengths of the University of Holguín, the vice rector highlights “the unity of the factors, as fundamental driving forces, such as the administrative the administrative staff, the Communist Party of Cuba, the Trade Union, the Federation of University Students and the Young Communist League. The availability of a management system oriented to quality and the integration of its processes.
Other strengths that we identified are the composition of the faculty, both in terms of teaching categories and in terms of PhDs, master’s degrees and specialists; the impact that the university has had on the training of professionals in the territory, not only at the undergraduate level but also in the training of cadres and reserves.
We also identify as a great strength the whole system of events that the University has the University’s system of events, which includes academic, scientific and cultural events, two of which are and cultural events, two of which are international in scope.
Something that I consider very important in recent times is the accompaniment of the provincial authorities in the organization and execution of programs and projects for government management based on science and technology.
