Holguín Celebrated International Rural Women’s Day

For agricultural worker Aliuska Aguilera contributing to society with the fruits of her labor on the soil fills her with satisfaction, and makes her feel empowered, a task for which she was recognized this October 15 as part of the celebrations in Holguin of the International Day of Rural Women.

The Frank País García cooperative farm, located in the municipality of Urbano Noris, was the venue of the celebration where farmers, neighbors of the locality, and political and mass organizations praised the performance of six women in the territorial socioeconomic development.

This date, celebrated annually in the Caribbean country, aims to distinguish the courage of those Cuban women who, faced with a complex reality and in the scenario of a remote community, preserve the spirit of resistance and dedicate their lives to food production, said Juan Abreu, member of the Provincial Bureau of the National Association of Cuban Farmers (ANAP for its Spanish acronym).

Every time more they are integrated into all sectors of this valuable task, whether in investment projects, in family, urban, suburban and semi-protected agriculture, where they show their integrity and worth as managers and workers by asserting their rights and putting their strengths into practice, he said.

Radine Boizán Mesa, an associate of this cooperative, said that she is proud to be an empowered woman who contributes to the well-being of her family and her locality, made possible thanks to the gender equality programs implemented since 1959 and materialized by the Federation of Cuban Women and the ANAP.

Aware of the importance of her role in today’s society, the farmer ratified her commitment to continue producing in a way that can provide food for the population and increase the use of science, technology and agroecology in order to overcome the consequences of climate change and improve crop yields.

Aliuska Aguilera Ávila, a member of the Mario Muñoz cooperative farm, added that despite the complexities of her life, in which she must combine the work of mother, wife and music professional with work in the field, the recognition awarded reaffirms her desire to do more and better in order to contribute to those who have placed their trust in her.

Celebrated since 2007, the International Day of Rural Women was established by the United Nations General Assembly with the aim of advancing gender equality processes and highlighting the role of rural women and girls in food systems around the world.
