Alegres de Mayari remain undefeated in the provincial baseball series

The team of the Alegres from Mayarí continued their triumphant pace and with a pair of victories against the Tiburones from Antilla remained as the only undefeated squad of the XLVII Holguin Province Baseball Series, after ten outings on the field.

Playing as locals at Emilio Gómez Bermúdez stadium, Mayari firstly won over Baguanos (9×3) with Wilson Paredes (3-0) in the hill, and home runs by Osbel Sosa and Jorge Luis Peña, (2-4) and three runs batted in. For the defeated team, José William Torres homered too.

The second victory of the Alegres was by the mercy rule in five innings, 10×0, with a personal smile for Yusmel Velázquez (3-0) and the fourth homer of Peña, leader in this department.

The Mineros from Moa started impetuous at “Rogelio Herrera” ball park of Cayo Mambí with a wide score of 15×1, and throwers Yoiler Matos winning; the offense by Luis Daniel Corona and Liusbel Ramos was also great, (2-2, both) and two runs batted in.

The locals, Leones from Frank País, reacted in the second match and won 4×3 with Noel Suárez on the mound and outstanding batting by Adrián Elías, 2-4, and Reynier Lara, 3-4 and one run batted in.

Visiting the “Melchor Anido” stadium, the Cafetaleros from Sagua de Tánamo imposed respect in the first game (5×3) with personal success for thrower José Miguel Rodríguez (3-0) at the expense of Rubén Oris falling. Reynaldo Bravo and Luis Raúl Domínguez (2-4), the latter with a home run and two runs batted in, supported the winning cause.

The Tigres from Báguanos came back at the close, 12×4, with a triumphant performance by Rubén Rodríguez, supported by Maikel Rivas, 3-5 with 2 runs driven in, and Leandro Martínez, 3-4 with 3 runs batted in. In the losing cause, Domínguez hit 2-4 and once again homered.

The Sultanes from Holguín, defending champions, defeated the Indios from Banes twice at “Feliú Leyva” stadium, in the first match by the mercy rule (11×0) in five innings, with a good start by José Antonio Sánchez, who, being limited to 60 pitches, could not get the victory because he did not complete the four regulation innings. The win went to Julio Verdecia; for his part Ernesto Torres produced two doubles and drove in two runs.

The Sultanes then won 5×1 on the arm of thrower José Manuel Rivas and the productive offense of Luis Miguel Santiesteban, with a triple and home run in two innings, José Luis Agüero, with two doubles in three innings, and Raúl Pupo with a long two-run homer.

The other three duels in the Western Zone concluded with division of honors, at “Orlando Proenza Vera” stadium of Buenaventura, the Colosos from Urbano Noris blanked the Vaqueros from Calixto García 3×0 with a smile for thrower uis Manuel Angulo and a double by Arnolis Poll that batted in all the runs for his team. The Vaqueros gave back the lead at the closin match of the day, 2×0, with the combined work in the mound by Carlos Ramiro Méndez and José Luis Ruiz.

Those attending the “Luis Figueredo” ballpark in the town of Maceo witnessed a superb work of the 16-year-old Luis Daniel Rodríguez, who in 6 2/3 chapters struck out twelve batters and led the Juveniles to a 5×1 success. On offense, Yordan Manduley Jr., 1-1 with three runs batted in, and Anthony Calderón, 2-4 with two runs batted in, were outstanding for the youngsters.

At the second match Luis Cáser and Víctor Paz, winner and savior in that order, joined forces to blank the Cachorritos 6×0. For the Mambises de Cacocum, Antonio Miranda hit a run with the bases loaded.

Two hard-fought games were played at “Mariano Camacho Romero” ballpark of Santa Lucia, the first one was a 9×8 victory in eight innings for Rafael Freyre’s Navegantes with Ramiro Rodriguez’s personal success and Yoan Palacio’s offensive support, 4-2 with 3 batted in runs. Then the Piratas from Gibara reacted, 2×1, with success for Yolexis Montero and outstanding batting by Yusnier Pino, 3-2 with 2 runs driven in.

After five competitive days, with double games each, the standings in each of the zones are as follows:

Eastern Division: Alegres from Mayarí (10-0); Cafetaleros from Sagua de Tánamo and Ferroviarios from Cueto (5-3); Tigres from Báguanos (4-4); Mineros from Moa (4-6); Leones de Frank País (2-6) and Tiburones de Antilla (0-8).

Western Division: Sultanes from Holguín (8-1); Indios from Banes, Cachorritos Juveniles, Mambises from Cacocum and Vaqueros from Calixto García (5-5); Colosos from Urbano Noris and Piratas from Gibara (4-5) and Navegantes from Rafael Freyre (3-7).

The sixth particular games of the domestic baseball tournament in Holguín are scheduled for this Saturday 12 when the rivals will be:

Eastern Division: Moa – Cueto (at Angel Romero Videaux stadium); Sagua de Tanamo – Leones de Frank País (at José Abreu stadium); Antilla – Báguanos (at Remigio Marrero stadium). Mayarí team will take the day off.

Western Division: Gibara – Cacocum (at Jorge Martín Magariño stadium); Urbano Noris – Rafael Freyre (at Rogelio Pupo Ricardo stadium); Banes – Calixto García (at Thelmo Esperance stadium) and Juveniles – Holguín (at EIDE).
