The Cuban Association of Persons with Physical and Motor Disabilities (Aclifim) in the province of Holguin continues to promote the self-empowerment of its members in spite of the limitations caused by the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba.
So far this 2024, more than a thousand Aclifim associates have received the benefits of employment programs, links with culture and art, comprehensive rehabilitation and the delivery of means of support, Oslaidis Cruz Díaz, vice-president of Aclifim in the territory, pointed out to ACN.
The genocidal policy limits the acquisition of materials used in the manufacture of prostheses, canes, braces and braking systems for wheelchairs, although the province already has a program led by the Factory of Agricultural Implements (Holmeca) that offers a solution to this problem through innovation.
The US blockade has a negative influence on the purchase of necessary equipment for the rehabilitation required by infants with moderate and severe mental retardation or visual disabilities, such as technical aids applied in occupational therapy, said the expert.
This group is also affected by the lack of other means, such as anti-decubitus mattresses, which are necessary to improve the quality of life of prostrate patients and those with sequelae of neurological diseases that cause disability, she said.
In the midst of this complex panorama, the organization promotes the donation of these tools through international institutions or the application of technological innovation to contribute to local solutions that allow the inclusion of its members.
Holguín is among the Cuban provinces with the highest number of people with physical-motor, hearing, visual, intellectual disabilities or different types of mental retardation, so one of the priorities of the territory is to promote the attention to this segment.
Aclifim has more than 3,000 affiliates grouped in 14 base sections and includes among its priorities programs such as the elimination of architectural barriers, housing and learning daily living skills according to the conditions of each case.
