Despite the difficulties and challenges -among which are the limitations of fuel and electricity generation- creative alternatives are sought and new projects are undertaken, highlighted Manuel Marrero Cruz, deputy for the municipality of Gibara in Holguín province, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba and prime minister, when he verified the start-up, in its first stage, of the new headquarters of the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Hospital.
The medical facility, now located in what used to be Gibara Psychiatric Hospital, has been operating since mid-August, according to information provided by its director, Dr. Mirka Irina Céspedes.
Here, she said, the gynecology-obstetrics room, a medical room, an observation room with beds for six patients, cubicles for polytraumas, orthopedics, as well as several administrative rooms are in operation.
The decision to refurbish this facility is due to the fact that its original site was affected several times by sea incursions from hurricanes that hit the area.
When the second phase is completed – which depends on the availability of resources – the services will be completely transferred from the old premises, which, after the corresponding repairs, will house the Public Health Department of the territory, while part of it will be used for medical teaching.
Marrero Cruz, faithful to his habit of exchanging with his compatriots on matters that affect them, inquired about the way in which the medical personnel travel to the center, and learned that they spend a considerable amount of money every month on transportation.
When Dr. Susana Pérez told him that the greatest expenses in the use of transportation correspond to the specialists who live in the city of Holguín, the Head of Government suggested to the Health authorities to create lodging alternatives, such as temporary shelters with adequate conditions.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the commitment of the people of Gibara, even in the midst of the difficult situation the country is going through.
“We are not losing heart, we are not standing still, and this is perceived by the people, which commits us even more to continue looking for solutions to improve the quality of life of the population, having, as the Army General has taught us, unity as a premise”, he said.
The deputy’s interest in the good progress of the investments had already come to light at the beginning of the working day, when he checked the construction of the Caletones Camping Site, especially when he visited the area where a small private company is building a desalination plant, the civilian part of which has a cost of 46 million pesos.
The desalination plant, made up of two modules (one donated by Japan and the other one the result of an investment by the Ministry of Tourism), will guarantee six liters per second for the benefit of the town’s residents and visitors during the summer season.
When the plant – currently in the digging, foundation and wall raising phase – is ready in December, the campground that last summer hosted the participants in the Gibara Film Festival and the electronic music event that takes place periodically, should be fully operational, although the water supply was provided by water trucks.

After the visit to the hospital, Marrero Cruz, accompanied by Yoel Queipo Ruiz, member of the Central Committee of the PCC and first secretary of the organization in Holguin province, and Manuel Hernandez Aguilera, governor of the province, arrived at the water treatment plant that ensures quality water to the more than 30 thousand residents of Gibara.
An investment is being made in this plant to restore its original capacity. There, he was informed about the new equipment received for pumping and filter repairs.
He also toured the Fernando VII Battery, an emblematic fortification from the Spanish colonial period. Until recently, it was used by the Directorate of Municipal Culture as a historical reference center, also used for tourist purposes, and now it is managed by Palmares bussines group as a snack bar, to serve national and foreign tourists, which since last August has generated considerable income.
The Prime Minister then attended the inauguration of an ice cream factory called Bella Vista. The latter, which belongs to the UEB that the Empresa Provincial Productora de Alimentos in that municipality, gets the raw material through the production chain with economic actors of the private sector.
Marrero Cruz made observations on the possibility of lowering the selling prices to the population, which, according to the facility’s directors, are in line with the cost sheets. Among other things, he suggested making more use of the capacity of local fruit pulp producers.
Next, the Prime Minister spoke with the Gibara Municipal Administration Council about the main issues raised by the population, and inquired about the preparations for the process of the delegate’s accountability to his constituents, which begins on September 20.
He then spoke with pig producer Eduardo González Betancourt, who has created a functional facility near the town of Uñas. He has about two thousand pigs in pre-fattening and fattening, to which he guarantees food from the Creole feed and the yucca yogurt he produces.
Eduardo told Marrero Cruz that his success is due to his personal perseverance and the support he has received since he started pig farming in 2008, since he has been provided with credits and other facilities.
The Prime Minister pointed out that producers like him must count on the full cooperation of the local authorities, and took the opportunity to ratify the interest in giving land to all those who really put it into production.
He asserted that there is no truth in the assertions of the enemies of the Revolution that it is opposed to the development of MSMEs, since serious steps have been taken to use them for the economy.
Prime Minister of Cuba, visit, Gibara, Holguín

In Cuba, 80 percent of food production is in the hands of cooperatives and the private sector, which will always count on state support.
The country needs food producers, and it does not matter if they make big profits in that process, which will always be better for development, than having people who get rich importing containers of products that they commercialize at excessive prices, he said.
According to the work agenda of the Head of Government, this Friday, he visited rural communities and exchange with the inhabitants in his capacity as deputy to the National Assembly of People’s Power for the municipality of Gibara.
