University of Holguin opened to new academic calendar

More than three thousand new students of the University of Holguin (UHo) begin today the teaching activities of the 2024-2025 academic calendar, to which the continuing students will join next October 7 in order to resume the traditional calendar.

With a general enrollment of over 11 thousand students, the current academic period is a challenge for the university due to the existing economic and material limitations, which do not diminish the efforts of its workers in the formation of fully trained professionals, said Aniuska Ortiz, rector of the UHo.

To this end, work was done to ensure the indispensable conditions that would guarantee the return to the classrooms and the adequate development of the educational process, among them, the availability of the material basis for study and the state of the residences and food for the scholarship students, she said.

As part of the changes to infrastructure, and to advance in the digital transformation plan, the building where the central computing node is located was improved, which allows the protection of the high-tech equipment installed there, to which the services were also reconfigured, he said.

Ortiz Perez stressed that included in the fundamental purposes of the institution during this course are the consolidation of links between the 42 majors and the business system to create teaching units that favor the practical application of knowledge and collaboration with the government in the use of science that contributes to local development.

Both tasks are essential in view of the upcoming institutional evaluation next month by the National Accreditation Board, an analysis in which favorable results have been obtained in the past with 21 accredited specialties and five of excellence, she explained.

The rector added that at present the UHo has nine faculties composed of 36 daytime courses, the same number by meeting courses, to which Social Work was recently added; 12 short cycle courses, and five approved at a distance, taught by a committed faculty where about 28 percent are doctors and more than 72 specialists.

The University of Holguin, 55 years old, has been composed since 2014 of the Oscar Lucero Moya, Celia Sanchez Manduley teaching campuses, the Jose de la Luz y Caballero Pedagogical Institute and the Manuel Fajardo Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports, in addition to 10 municipal centers and two affiliates.

In the current academic year, enrollment in Higher Education in Cuba exceeds 221,200 students, of which some 59,400 are new entrants.
