Biofactory in Holguin contributes to obtaining resilient crops

The biofactory for plant reproduction through biotechnology in the Cuban province of Holguin contributes to food sovereignty programs with the multiplication of varieties for short-cycle crops.

In that facility, located in the industrial zone of Holguin city, banana, yam, malanga, sweet potato varieties are obtained, which are resilient to intense drought, soil degradation and other effects of climate change, among the projections of the agriculture sector.

Eugenio Almarales, agronomist and specialist of this institution, told ACN that after a thorough scientific process it is possible to reproduce up to three thousand specimens from a single mother plant, taking into account innovation and high quality standards.

These postures have among their main destinations the production units of the territory where, in addition, through the intervention of international projects, equipment such as central pivot irrigation systems, tractors and technological packages are introduced to increase the properties of the land, he said

He said that they are also marketed among farmers with outstanding results in the agricultural sector, from whose fields the donor plants come out to restart the reproduction process, once the final product is obtained.

The Holguín biofactory was founded more than 40 years ago, with the purpose of using science and technological innovation in agriculture and increasing the productivity of crops with seedlings from laboratory chambers.

In the eastern province, Cuba’s third most densely populated, a broad research program is being developed to produce natural fertilizers, optimize the use of water and substitute imports of inputs.
