Pediatrics Pre-Congress Course held in Holguín

As part of the activities prior to the XXIX Cuban Congress of Pediatrics, the Pre-Congress Course named Protective Mechanical Ventilation and Use of Exogenous Surfactant in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome was held this September 14 at the Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja Teaching Hospital in Holguin.

This important scientific event, conducted by Andrés Matos – a specialist of I and II degrees in Pediatrics and Intensive Care Medicine, was attended by more than 50 trainees among residents, interns and students of Medicine.

Its agenda included a tribute to late Dr. Luis Rodríguez Guerrero, the pioneer of Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine, coinciding with the proximity of the commemoration of the 42nd anniversary of the Intensive Care Service of the hospital, every September 17.

Dr. Aracelis Hernandez Garcia, head of the Teaching Department at the institution, expressed that “every child deserves the opportunity to grow, play and live a full life and it is our goal to fight for each one of them, for each heartbeat, for each smile”.

“This meeting was honored with the participation of Dr. Anelia Rojas Perez, president of the Holguin Chapter of the Cuban Society of Pediatrics; Dr. Hector Pupo Rodriguez, director of the health care center and head of the Provincial Group of Pediatrics; as well as coordinators of the Academic Committees of the Specialties of Pediatrics, Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine, Neonatology and Pediatric Nursing; and authorities from the General Directorate of Health, the Maternal and Child Care Program and the University of Medical Sciences of Holguin,” he added.

At the initiative of the participants during the academic session, they were worn in blue, representing oxygen, a vital component in critically ill patients. In addition, Dr. Georgina Altagracia Velázquez, a pioneer in neonatal surgery in the eastern region, was nominated for the Liane Barbolla award.

During the course, an excellent scientific exchange was carried out by distinguished professors of the province. Hence the positive balance left by this day that provided knowledge and greater security to face the challenges of clinical practice.
