Journalism and its current challenges

Journalism is one of the cornerstones of any democratic society. Through the investigation and dissemination of news, journalists play a crucial role in shaping public opinion, enabling citizens to make more conscious and participatory decisions in social, political and economic life. However, journalism today faces multiple challenges that threaten its integrity and effectiveness.

Globally, the digital era has revolutionized the way information is consumed. Social networks have enabled a democratization of access to information, but have also given rise to the proliferation of fake news and disinformation.

The speed with which information flows often outstrips the ability to verify it, posing a significant challenge for traditional media. In addition, the concentration of media ownership and increasing economic pressure have led to a weakening of the quality of journalism, prioritizing clickbait over in-depth investigation.

In the context of Cuba, journalism also faces challenges such as the proliferation of fake news, the decreased credibility of traditional media, audience fragmentation due to social networks, and economic constraints. These challenges jeopardize the integrity and quality of journalistic practice, as well as the public’s trust in the information it receives.

In Holguín, the situation reflects both the general difficulties of Cuban journalism and the particularities of a developing region. Local journalists struggle to cover topics of community interest, from the economy to culture, amidst a climate of uncertainty and restrictions. Lack of resources, training and access to digital platforms further limit their ability to report effectively.

To meet these challenges, media and journalists must adapt to the new realities of the digital environment. This implies investing in professional development, promoting media and information literacy, diversifying the sources of information, and diversifying the sources of information.

Journalists need to maintain high ethical standards, follow principles of rigorous verification of information and be transparent in their reporting process. In addition, it is important for the public to be critical of the sources of information they consume and to support the media, which must maintain integrity and editorial quality to remain a reliable source of information in the digital age.

It is imperative to strengthen support mechanisms for journalists and promote an environment where communication is increasingly pluralistic, analytical and reflective. In this way, journalism will be able to fulfill its essential function of serving truth and democracy for the benefit of society as a whole.
