The University of Medical Sciences of Holguin (UCMHo) is expanding its community work as part of the comprehensive training and improvement of the family doctor and nurse practitioner programs.
Galina Galcerán Chacón, rector of the university, told ACN that several years ago the institution began to include its students in projects for the timely diagnosis of chronic non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes mellitus and cancer in different locations.
She emphasized that as of 2022 the students will also collaborate in the active research of respiratory diseases, diarrhea and non-specific fever included in the academic processes of this teaching.
At the same time and with the contribution of specialized institutions such as the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias, the students are involved in the study and treatment protocols of these incurable diseases, she added.
Medical students linked to community work in Holguin
The University of Holguín is also involved in health promotion activities in primary health care in order to promote the prevention of sexually transmitted infections and teenage pregnancy, indicators prioritized in the Millennium Development Goals until 2030.
Since its foundation more than 40 years ago, the UCMHo also has an extensionist program that strengthens the practice of sports and the insertion in artistic manifestations, together with the creation of solidarity contingents and the improvement through vertical internships.
The institution is also one of those with the highest enrollment in Cuba and annually welcomes foreign scholarship holders of terminal degrees from the Latin American School of Medicine and other solidarity projects from which more than 45 thousand have graduated from 1984 to date.
