Holguín: Health surveillance reinforced in vulnerable neighborhoods

The health system in the province of Holguin strengthens epidemiological surveillance in vulnerable communities to prevent the proliferation of diarrheal diseases and febrile illnesses common in the summer months.

During this time of the year, the incidence of diseases such as dengue, caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, whose breeding places are abundant due to the intense heat and frequent rains of the season, increases.

The main strategy is focused on reinforcing the follow-up of infants, pregnant women and children in these prioritized settlements, as well as contributing to the improvement of sanitary conditions, said Luis Orlando González, deputy general director of the sector.

He emphasized that the main actions include home visits, periodic clinical evaluation for the timely detection of symptoms and others included in the improvement of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program.

At the same time, in the municipalities of Banes and Urbano Noris, promotional activities are being expanded, with the participation of community actors, specialists and students of these branches, said the director.

He stressed that cleaning works are being carried out to reduce breeding sites at homes, where historically more than 95 percent of the vector’s centers in the eastern territory have been concentrated.

Parallel to the prevention activities, work is also being carried out to increase self focal control in the business sector and the sanitation of common areas in multi-family buildings, although there are difficulties with the collection of solid waste.

Aedes aegypti is the main transmitting agent of yellow fever – also of four dengue serotypes, chikungunya and Zika, among other diseases – and was discovered as such by the eminent Cuban scientist Carlos Juan Finlay, in 1881.
