The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) in the Cuban province of Holguin works annually in the protection of beaches during the summer months, ecosystems highly vulnerable to human action.
During the summer season, beach resorts such as Playa Blanca and Guardalavaca, in the municipalities of Rafael Freyre and Banes, respectively, receive a large number of visitors, which is why measures are taken to preserve the coastline and its surroundings.
Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, sub-delegate of the sector, stressed to ACN that based on the information provided by the catalog of these ecosystems, parking areas, sales areas and other services for bathers, away from the sand dunes, are established.
He emphasized that cleaning, sanitation and reforestation actions with autochthonous species are also organized as part of the environmental education developed in the coastal municipalities of the eastern territory.
At the same time, the monitoring of endemic populations of flora and fauna, characterized by their rarity and small size, which makes them fragile in the face of high concentrations of vacationers, continues.
Citma in Holguín also promotes the control of other aspects such as the presence of invasive exotic species, the management of solid waste in hotel facilities and the rational use of water.
The province has more than 12 beaches for tourist use and six seaside resorts incorporated into the world ranking, sponsored by Colombia: Guardalavaca, El Faro, Caletones, Playa Blanca, El Cristo and El Peñón; located in Banes, Gibara, Rafael Freyre and Mayarí, respectively.
