Cuban Transport Ministry authorizes import of more powerful marine engines

Cuba is encouraging commercial fishing and authorizing the import of marine engines, an official source revealed.

According to the Minister of Transportation, Eduardo Rodríguez, Cuban individuals and foreigners permanently residing in the national territory may acquire marine engines of up to 60 horsepower on a non-commercial basis for commercial fishing.

Rodríguez explained that the decision responds to requests from inhabitants of Cuban coastal communities, traditionally dedicated to fishing.

The measure should guarantee the safety of navigation, human life at sea, and the improvement of vessels used in non-state commercial fishing, the minister wrote on Facebook.

The acquisition of engines will correspond to the dimensions and technical-construction characteristics of the vessel, Rodríguez said.

The resolutions of the Ministries of Transport and Finance and Prices establishing the requirements and procedures for the import, have already come into force, and the obligation to obtain the permit through the Port Captaincies where the vessel is registered, remains in force, the minister pointed out.

Resolution 130 of 2024 of the Ministry of Transport repeals Resolution 100 of 2022, which set at 10 horsepower the maximum limit for the entry into the country, on a non-commercial basis, of this attachment for marine vessels.

Meanwhile, regulation 240 of this year, signed by the MFP authorizes, on an exceptional basis and without commercial reasons, the import above the established value by way of accompanied, unaccompanied baggage and for air, maritime, postal and courier shipments of marine engines of up to 60 horsepower.

It also sets the customs tax for this activity, which ranges between five and 30 percent.
